| I didn't suggest mindless slaughter. I suggested that the people who are responsible for these acts should be punished in such a way that the next group will think twice.
The fire fighters who died in the WTC walked into the face of death because they believe each life is sacred. That is their cause. A martyr is someone to rally around. Martyrs don't always go looking for glory. They sometimes become martyrs by accident.
What elaboration are you looking for? Am I a military leader? Do I have these answers? Bush wants these people punished. He will be likely to follow through.
Laws of all countries are enforced by making an example of the people who break them. This is probably why the US has more problem with crime than Singapore. We send our murderers and rapists to a gilded cage because they have rights. Singapore beats their vandals with a bamboo cane. As such, Singapore is a very clean and beautful city.
I mentioned genocide because I knew there was no reasonable way to prevent martyrs. Genocide is not an option. It will create contempt from the rest of the world if we even attempted it. The point of mentioning genocide is that it is not acceptable.
The other end of the scale is apathy. If the US government does not make it clear that this is not acceptable, and that you can't get away with it, terrorists will continue to come up with more and worse ways to hurt us. I won't even feel safe in my small town home.
There is also a worse side to the apathy card. If the government shows apathy, it will give people excuses to join right wing survivalist groups. These people will do so out of fear and attempting to protect their own. Unfortunately, this is the type of group that tends to end up resorting to terrorist acts of their own. Remember Oklahoma City?
I ask you what you suggest because you seem to be arguing with any call for force. From your arguments, I gather that you feel that force of any type is not the answer. From this post, I see you feel the same as me, a surgical strike that produces as little colateral damage as possible. Unfortunately, it appears that you did not fully understand my original post that said "Find the responsible parties and all who assisted them (by giving them political assylum perhaps) and make and example of them."
Do you understand what a surgical strike entails? You must first find each person and remove them from all innocents. These people will be hiding amungst the general populus. That won't be easy to do. There is also the possiblity that the people who assisted them includes a government.
Ben Laden has already shown you can get away with this stuff if you just run and hide in Afghanistan. I'm not talking about this attack, I am talking about the previous one. Ben Laden organized an attack on the WTC using bombs in the parking garage. His intent was to cause one building to topple into the other. He failed because (as he said himself) he didn't have enough money. Had he succeeded, there would have been no time for evacuation. More people would have been in the buildings when they toppled. And the buildings would have collapsed like dominoes on top of many other building, in stead of collapsing in on themselves.
At that time Ben Laden stated that he would try again. A short time ago, he said he was planning something big, soon. If he is responsible for this attack, then the Afghan government is also responsible. If he's not responsible, he's probably wishing he had thought of it. Either way, I think the Afghan government needs to be very careful about protecting him, now. George W. Bush is pissed. It won't take much to set him off.
