Something that's been bothering me... by slayer2001-09-11 23:10:55
A very real possibility by brion 2001-09-11 23:33:15
is that this is *intended* to provoke the US into premature retaliation without clear evidence of who was responsible, in the hopes that it'll make *us* like like the bad guys, beating up some poor, innocent country that just happened to have some uncontrollable terrorists in it.

Remember the embassy bombings a few years back? Remember the quick retaliatory strikes against a (nearly empty) training camp and a (later claimed to be apparently unrelated to bin Laden) factory? Remember hearing complaints about civilian casualties in those strikes for years?

Heck, every time Israel blows the bejeezus out of somebody they suspect of terrorism, the world chalks up more hate-points against them. Whether you think they're justified or not, this maintains a cycle of revenge in which both sides claim they're fighting because the other guy hit them first.

By not saying what their message is, the shadowy "they" who are responsible let us fill in the blank with whatever frightens us most, in the hopes that we'll act on our first impulses -- which in too many cases means blind hatred and vengefulness.
