I only said that that particular punishment MIGHT fit the atrocity of this crime. I also said that I wouldn't protest if this was what was called for - nowhere did I say that I'd encourage it. For the record, I don't think that the US is judge, juror and executioner of everyone. However, I do think that they are for whoever is behind this. You are a damned idiot if you think that forgiveness will put a stop to violence, especially violence of this scale and nature. What, honestly, do you think will happen in a week if our response is "We sympathize with the plight of Islamic fundamentalists, and we forgive you for your actions," an apology and a firm handshake and a promise of no more shenanigans? As I've said before, this must stop and it must stop immediately. Our realistic options are either a full-scale war (for the love of all things holy, no) or a precise military extraction of those truly responsible. A brief show trial, followed by a speedy execution, possibly on Pay-Per-View television. Perhaps, if indeed bin Laden is responsible, his considerable assets seized and then used to help with the rebuilding effort. Nothing short of brute force will get pleasant results. |
