You're trying to make an equity that doesn't exist.
If you, or he, or anyone, leave me alone, you'll do just fine.
If you harm mine, I'll butcher you and everyone in a 5 mile radius. This gives people the idea that leaving me alone is a really really good policy; and gives them incentive for suppressing obnoxious neighbors. Retaliation for the attack is in the same category. That he may feel the same way is irrelevant, because I have a bigger gun and will fire first.
Peace through elimination of opposition.
