I see a lot of finger-pointing on this board, and a lot of call for revenge and gruesome methods of execution for those responsible. I was particularly sickened by one comment advocating turning Palestine into a "glassy nuclear hell".

First of all, we do not yet know for certain who was responsible. Maybe it was a Palestinian extremist group, maybe it was an Islamic group. Maybe it was someone else entirely. We don't know. It's too soon to lay blame. It's certainly too soon to be talking about punishment for blame.

I imagine it would not be a pleasant experience to be a Muslim or Palestinian (or indeed any sort of Arab) living in American right now. I sincerely hope that all our UFies are capable of the clear thinking neccessary not to generalize and lay blame to an entire ethnic or religious group. Even if it was a Muslim extremist group, that doesn't mean all Muslims are to blame. It certainly doesn't mean we should declare war on Islamic countries. I'm sure most of you realize this, but I believe it needs to be said and reiterated nonetheless.

It was the "them vs. us" thinking that caused this. Whatever group it was obviously was thinking that all Americans are to blame for whatever grievance they had. It's this kind of thinking, this dehumanization of groups that leads to atrocities like this. Let's not allow our thinking to be perverted in the same way, by making generalizations about Islam or the Palestinians or whatever group was ostensibly supported by whoever commited this act.
