The last war on U.S. soil, not counting the plains wars, was in the 1860s. 600,000 Americans died, more than died fighting WWII. The plains wars in the late 19th century were an almost constant state of Low Intensity Conflict. So it's been about 100 years since we've been exposed to war on the home front. If history is any guide, we don't respond well to it. (by well, I mean... gently 8c)
