At least they have to come by boat to get to you. In the US, they just have to find a hole in the fence to get through. I'll give Australia one point, they are holding firm (or at least trying to) to their policies regarding refugees and immigrants.
Good ole Dubbya wants to go ahead and throw away our immigration laws and just allow a whole lot of illegals to just go ahead and stay as citizens now. Gee, and all that time the legal immigrants spent to become naturalized was for nothing, eh? I, for one, would love to see immigration laws eased up in the country, but it just isn't pratical now. We have an overburdened welfare system, a skyrocketing unemployment rate (almost 1 in 20 right now), and an economy that's taken a severe hit over the last 18 months. This is NOT the time to let a whole bunch of people without skills and education to just 'come on in and join the party'. And yes, that's what a majority of the illigal immigrants are, unskilled and uneducated. This is not meant to be a slam on them, but an admonishment of the country and society as a whole. |
