| Court decision is about the Norwegian boat-ppl |

we get about a boat with between 100 and 200 people usually, every couple of months, either at Christmas Is or Ashmore Reef (which is mostly submerged at high tide) - the Indonesians bring them usually in old wooden boats and leave them - on the reef (they know that if they get caught and the boat is impounded it will be burnt - they carry a nasty worm that we dont have in Aus waters.) The people who sail the boats get about 5 years jail from us and are then deported. This means their families in Indonesia lose their income for that time. This does not stop them doing it again and again. What they are doing is not illegal in Indonesia (Muslims do not require travel docs to enter Indonesia, so bringing them here is not illegal for them) and the Indonesian govt has virtually refused to help the Aus govt with the problem.
Nauru is to get an improved power source and some Aus debts cancelled, and some other stuff, totalling Aus$20m for helping with the refugees.
The refugees from the Norwegian boat were taken to Nauru by our navy - on the way they rescued another 200+ from a sinking Indonesian boat.
There was a docco form the BBC last night here - UK has as big a problem with Afghan and Iranian refugees sneaking thru the tunnel from France. If they can get there, the UK refugee laws are easier to comply with than some in Europe. There was another docco done by a UK born Afghan journalist who went there - a large part of the Afghan population is now spread around the world as refugees - many thousand in appalling camps just over the Pakistani border. The stream of asylum seekers is not going to stop for some time. |
