I have a question. by sir lox elroy 2001-07-31 16:05:54
I was wondering, would it be considered illegal or unethical to reverse engineer a virus and write an anti-virus well virus basically. This stems from my experience as a Sys Admin of Windows Mac and some Linux systems. At the time I worked for them, the Love Bug first came out and spread like wild fire, a few of our Windows boxes were hit, but I reverse engineered the virus and cleaned them before Norton, or McAfee had a cure. I was recently reading the news on the Linux Worm, and had thought about the idea, and then the Red Worm came about and I was thinking about it again. What do you think? Would it be illegal or unethical, even if I openly published it and the source to the web so that people could see what is going on?
