If you are using Java, give NetBeans (www.netbeans.org) or Forte (www.sun.com/forte/ffj) a shot. Both are good IDEs and work great and consistent under the different OS's. I use it over Emacs now. I use NetBeans because its Open Source and works on platforms not supported by Forte, even though Forte is built on NetBeans.

Some of the features are a bit tricky to get used to at first, but become very intuitive later. Just post questions if you have any problems, I lurk on UF every day.
