Don't even start to think that I'm defending VB here, but I do have to comment on your remarks regarding the if-then-else structure. VB is far from the only language to use an if-then-else construct instead of if-else. For instance, Pascal uses a then clause also. One benefit of using the then clause is that fewer parentheses are needed so that you can keep your condition and action separate. I encourage you to get a firm grasp on some language such as Java or C++ and then read a book on the concepts of programming languages...it can be quite interesting.
