"Postage will be paid by addressee" CDMailers? What was Tom playing at anyway? Then it struck me. No one in there right mind would go through such mail. Millions of those things are in transit at any given moment. Shaking my head at the technology that these guys were dreaming up, I packed the CD into the mailer, which already carried the address of the front company of the MI12.
The phone rang. "Now what?" I muttered lifting the phone and glancing at the caller ID. Too late. I wished I'd looked before lifting. It was someone from Illiad's gang.
"H'llo?"
"Hypermegadatadyne?"
"Yep."
"Core System Support?"
"Yep."
"Well this is kickstart here. I'd like to know what's been happening? The servers are to be down and the users are screaming their head's off and Yohimbe's chasing me with a 2 X 4"
"Ease up guys. There was a blackout, the generators and UPS both chose to run out on me. What the hell do I do?"
"Is it up yet?"
"Almost"
"Whaddya mean almost? You wanna get me killed or something? Gimme a break man. I just got engaged."
"I just finished the recovery and the server should be comming on in another 30 seconds."
"That's the first piece of good news I got so far. Does this mean you have been rebuilding our data?"
Was this guy getting suspicous or what? I tried to sound normal. "Had to guys. I was in the middle of a backup and we got a project to deliver in 48 hrs." I thougth I sounded ok.
"Ok. Just making sure. Is everything ok, or dyu need any help?"
"Nope I got it all up."
Then I heard a female voice in the background. A voice I could never forget. Screaming "YOU'LL NEVER GET AWAY .... " the phone was cut. I stood there holding the receiver. Not being able to believe I heard that voice again. It was her. Still alive after all these years. I had to rescue her too. This lent a double urgency to my mission. Somehow I had to infiltrate their HQ and get her out of there.
That was not what I was told, but I never did what I was told in the first place anyway. I was one of those 'Independent Action' guys. I wondered if ol' Tom's toolkit contained something else...
I picked it up again and examined for Q's signature false-bottom. Yep it was there all right, something no one but Q and me knew (and obviously his successor). I clicked it open and it slid back to reveal an Diplomatic British passport containing my photograph, with the name 'Mike' and air tickets for Vancouver. There was a note and another sealed box.
"I know. So All the best. Go get her

Wow. This kid really was Q's successor. No one but him knew my love for Miranda. Maggie was only acting on suspicion. Now maybe I could get the woman in my life, that I truly loved after all. Hopes began to well in my heart like a mountain stream in the torrential rain.
I picked up the mailer and the extra copy, set the phone to voice mail locked the server room and slipped out. It was going to be a long day. I dropped the CDMailer in the mail and went home.
I stepped into my apartment and began to go over the events. Sounded too good to be true. I examined my new passport and tickets. Then, I opened the sealed box. It contained ________________________ |
