I installed debian, _with_ X, on a T1950 (similar, if not identical, specs). I assume you got at least a pcmcia slot (mine had one) ... I put a 3com 562D modem+network card in it (VERY linux friendly), had the root/boot and drivers' diskettes ready, and after these babies loaded I got the rest from ftp.us.debian.org - you gotta love network installation :) especially if you have cable connection - and it just rocked. One night was enough to get, as said, even X running, and nothing special about the actual installation, only that at some point I had to fire up another terminal and start erasing the files that were done installing, to keep some space on the HDD - my HDD was bigger though, 500MB, so I put all sorts of junk :)
I would suggest you put only real basic stuff in there ... and you can live without X, I guess (my screen was 8 inch! and it was painful; virtual screen gives me the creeps). Again, you _CAN_ install debian, and even easily. And maybe get a bigger HDD?
If you need some more hints ... that is, you get stuck at some point ... send me an e-mail at cosmin@beethoven.com
good luck!
