Rule of thumb that I always use is twice your RAM or 128MB, whichever is lower. If you have a huge swap partition it is not efficiently managed so you actually waste CPU cycles managing it, and with a swap partition of 512MB you would have to be doing major work to even come close to using it. IMHO its too big.
