1) A lot of cub scout packs and boy scout troops meet at public schools, get access to recruit there, etc. If they implement discriminatory policies that are contrary to the public school's own policies, this should be at the least discouraged. I wouldn't want a KKK 'White-Pride' Youth Group or something meeting at my local public school either! Go rent a dang room somewhere...
2) In my own years as a Boy Scout, I learned straight from the handbook that a Scout should be tolerant and accepting of people with different religions "or no religion". Years later I discovered that the BSA actually kicked people out from time to time for publically admitting that they were, like me, atheists. If someone had made a stink about it at the time, it could have happened to me, even if I were supported by everyone at the *local* level!
Whether you think an organization should "admit whoever the hell they want", I rather suspect it should be in accordance with their own principles, which *CLEARLY STATE* that religious tolerance is a key virtue which their own organization claims to support. It's utterly hypocritical and disgusting -- children are lured into the group thinking it's about camping, civic service, teamwork, and fun, and then discover it's a secret religious club? Eh? May as well print a banner over all their recruitment materials - "NANA - No Atheists Need Apply".
3) Sure, they can admit whoever they want. And I can complain about it from here to Timbuktu until they see the light. It's their right and mine. |
