| Dead horse atm? sure. But here goes. There is no justice without mercy. What does that mean precisely? While there are laws and standards in this society which we all must adhere to for the sake of some larger goal, if we break them we will be punished, fine, we've all got to live with the consequences. But when the consequences of our transgressions become too severe that is only going to encourage unrest. While I'm not necessarily opposed to criminal exectuion, it would certainly have more meaning if it wasn't metered out willy nilly. There are enough people on death row right now who are innocent. more often than not, the death penalty is about revenge, not justice, and the two are greatly removed from each other. |
