Oh, ok.. I get it... Those double negatives... | by shana | 2001-05-19 17:57:13 |
| That wasn't a double negative, dear. |

The phrase "to not cost" was a split infinitive, but it wasn't a double negative. Double negatives...erm...negate each other, and can both be removed and the sentence not lose any of its meaning. Imagine if I'd said the following:
I'm not using any browser that has got enough sense to cost me anything. Or, I'm using any browser that hasn't got enough sense to cost me anything. Or even, I'm using any browser that has got enough sense to not cost me anything.
None of those make much sense, and certainly don't mean the same thing as my original sentiment. Now that our grammar lesson is over, I can say what I meant to say in the first place. Know what I love? People who are so upset by the thought of my opinion being different from theirs that they'll spend every waking hour for the rest of their lives trying to change my mind. Especially when it's on such an important issue as what web browser *I* use on *my* computer. And I'm not going to repeat any of my numerous "Rampant, Recreational Microsoft Bashing Is One Of The Dumber Things A Body Can Do" rants. But I will restate this, because some people need to hear it every day of their lives: Your not liking something is not enough to deprive it of any redeeming value. |
