| Well I've tried mandrake(7.0), I found some applications just weren't stable enough for me and updating them really difficult (apparently there was a problem w/ dependencies with rpms in the version I was using) Other then that it was fairly easy to use, Redhat pretty much the same, just the installer & start up screen wasn't as fancy. I didn't use either of them that long. Personally I like neither one of those distributions.
I've also tried Corel's version of linux. It was very easy to set up and I found it some what intuitive in use & maintenance. The thing I liked most about it was the graphical interface for apt-get. Point, Click, Install (it automaticly got the dependancies too), and the nice thing is that you could specify where you got the updates from (I pointed it to debians ftp site) eventually the only code i had left from the original install was the kernal, oss sound drivers & some of the graphical interface. Many people how ever complain that it's too windows like, but I found for a user transfering from windows to linux it was a great stepping stone.
Currently I'm running Slackware. Because I'm using it as a ftp server and I was using it for chatting on IRC from work, I never bothered with any sort of GUI.
One thing I've noticed between the different distributions is that none of the configuration/maintenance tools are the same. Some have tools that do everything and anything for you where others you have sample files to edit and others give you a blank file to work in (no examples)
As for which one is the right one for you? Good question. Which one will meet your needs? Are you looking for something easy to use or are you looking to learn linux? Regardless of which version you install you probably won't much unless you get right into the command line.
