| Mandrake and Red Hat are simpler to install than Winders, and not quite as buggie (though they are working on that). However, it configures things for you with defaults and is a pain sometimes if you want to change something.
Slackware is a true geeks distribution . . . You are pretty close to where the rubber meets the road on this, so a new user will have a very steep learning curve.
Debian is halfway in between. I like it the best, but you have to know your hardware and research the modules appropriate to them (no auto detection).
That said, I'd suggest Mandrake unless you want to spend a lot of time learning how to install instead of spending a lot of time playing with your nifty new playtoy.
