Well, me personally, i never used an undelete facility and i never
missed it. I can remember only once, that i lost really valuable
data. That was when i badly damaged the file system on a floppy disk
while working with DOS. (Changing the disk at a very bad moment, DOS
wrote the FAT from the old disk onto the new. That was quite long
ago, when i used to store data on floppys.) No need to say, that
there was no undelete facility for this kind of incident (despite the
fact, that this was before DOS had any undelete thingys).
For things like editing files, i often use CVS, so i am able to revert
changes and - much more important - compare with older versions, to
see what i have done and why i did. The rest is done by the backup
tape.
Unix is for people who know what they are doing and who think before
they act. Unix is designed as a tool for people who are able to
handle tools, not as an assistant that addresses to dumb users and
thus tries to be smarter than the user. That's what makes Unix such a
great tool.

I don't want to get *nix on any desktop other then mine. I have Linux
at home and Solaris at work, that's exactly what i want and so i'm
happy. I don't care about other people's desktops.

I see no need for an technical excuse for not having an undelete
facility as long as i consider such a thing useless.

Products such as StarOffice and Gnome might indicate, that they are
currently people who want Linux on their own desktop. That doesn't
mean that these people are up to become missionaries and persuade
other people to get it as well. (Despite that fact that i avoid using
this StarOffice-crap whenever possible.) |
