In one of the Calvin and Hobbes anthologies, Watterson said that the Sunday colour strips are usually done a few weeks before the other strips because of the extra time it takes for colouring (or some such nonesense). Because of this, it takes more planning than most cartoonists are capable of to match the Sunday strip with the current plot. I don't know how true that is with UF which is mostly (entirerly?) digital and does not have to meet printing deadlines of newspapers all over.
