usually tell someone's sex by the way they speak (in their posts). I'm most often right, but I do make a number of mistakes, too.   But knowing (or thinking you know) someone's sex definitely changes the way you talk to them. You choose different words; you avoid certain arguments; and you sometimes even choose to forego arguments altogether for the subconcious hope that "she" will be smitten with you because you agree - when in fact you would be flaming the hell out of "him". (Let's add the obligatory "vice versa" here.)   I don't think it is an accident that many names are ambiguously chosen, although it may not be a conscious decision. Part of us always knows that we are judged by our appearance, and sometimes we choose to alter that appearance for reasons of our own.   I have to admit that I enjoy being judged on the worthiness of my logic rather than the fairness of my skin. I think it is a good mental exercise to keep people guessing. The less they actually know about you, the more they are forced to listen to you. Isn't that a great thing for geeks?   Let's not worry overmuch about what sex, age, or orientation a person is. If we mistakenly refer to her as him, a polite correction is certainly acceptable - but remember that you are giving up a piece of your anonymity. Thus, you change the way people interact with you.   This is a bit of the thread of my discourse, but I suspect Sun Tzu would have absolutely no idea where to keep someone like vilepiles. (Sorry, it's logically connected in my mind, but I can't begin to document the steps I took getting there.)
