| Yeah, well, apparewntly Dylan agreed. He sat on his recording for over twenty years, remember.
According to legend, a similar thing happened with 'Tambourine Man', except that it got kinda complicated (those who have heard this story can skip it). Another band, I forget then name, had heard about it ahead of time, and knew that, while the song had the potential to be a hit, Dylan's versionwas sub-par. They went ahead and recorded a cover that they meant to release after Dylan's was. However, Dylan, recognizing its flaws, didn't release his version at that time.
Now, according to the intellectual property laws of the time (I don't know if this has changed), andyone can cover a song that hase already been released providing they give due credit, and pay any royalties requested by the original author (the royalties didn't have to be worked out ahead of time, and were restricted to a specific maximum percentage, IIRC). However, the songwriter had the right to choose who could release it first. Dylan decided that his own version was lousy, so (unaware of the other band, apparently) he gave the go-ahead to The Byrds to record it. The other band was stuck; they couldn't release their version until the Byrds did, but once the Byrds version was released, it would blow their version out of the water. The band in question faded into oblivion.
