I can understand why DSL would be too much hassle.
You'd have to have a network inside of your dorm, assuming that there is more than one computer. And you'd have to deal with the support issues that come with doing *anything* out of "But that's not what $someone has at their house!".
And I'm also assuming that you probably don't get along with them either.
Here's my solution:
Since you live in SoCal, go to this isp http://www.surfside.net. I used them before I got my DSL a year ago.
Go to any free email service and have them sign up. Yahoo, or whatever. Also check out www.crosswinds.net if they want pop3 service.
I don't think that having several people in one account is a good solution for anything except a family. Because anyone could leave at any time, and email shouldn't be associated with where you live.
