| You have to remember that not everyone who uses computers necesarily does it for personal enjoyment or knowledge. For many, computers are just the (annoying) means to an end. They could care less what an SMTP or POP server is, they just want to email their buddy in Kalamazoo.
Back when i was doing tech, the company i was at supported a UNIX system used at Army post daycare centers. The folks, mostly women, who used the system viewed it as useful at best, and a pain in their a** at worst. And yes, we had folks hitting reset buttons on mainframes and all sorts of really stupid stuff. But you couldnt blame them, because they had absolutely no interest in learning how the system worked, they just cared about the kids they were looking after. The system was just a tool that (in theory) allowed them to do that better.
So yes, while there are some real, legit id10ts and 1users out there who make some of the dumbest mistakes, you just have to remember many of them dont share the same interest or fascination with computers that most of us do. So they dont really care how something works, or how they can fix it. They just want it fixed. |
