| >I've heard a lot of technobabble during my year as tech, and I would have to ask to sony. Does your VP know what he is saying? If he had any hint of how Napster functioned as a software, or how the internet itself worked he would understand that such an undertaking would be technically impossible to do without a miracle.
I also run a small ISP and I also think that the idea of Sony firewalling *everything* is ludicrous.
However, the idea is fairly scary. With the ruling in the Napster trial, is it that much of a stretch to imagine the RIAA convincing or forcing a few very large ISP's to block Napster traffic? Do you think that the spineless cable and telco companies (throw AOL in there too) would stand up and fight for consumer's rights?
That's one reason why it's *extremely* important that the independent, small ISPs continue to exist. Sony or the RIAA (or any other large, greedy corp like MS) will never be able to exercise the kind of content controls they dream about as long as there are independent ISPs to snub their noses at them.
Today, cable companies don't allow a choice in the ISP you can use with cable Internet service (even though the cable infrastructure was built up under the protection of a government-sanctioned monopoly). Telco companies charge ridiculous rates to independent ISPs who want to offer DSL services, making it nearly impossible to compete with the telco-sponsored ISPs. With this type of predatory competition, small ISPs are going to fold as broadband services proliferate. When the small ISPs are gone, it won't be too long before Sony's plans can be a reality. |
