| With all the talk, hype and rave about the PS2, I felt kinda "bad", because I was actually starting to like the console. After the original PSX disappointed me, and Sony started doing all sorts of things that I don't like a big company doing, I promised not to buy one of their products ever again. But the PS2 looked so hot, I almost had it on pre-order. Meanwhile, I'm happy I didn't buy it =)
I got a Dreamcast instead, because I feel Sega still cares for the Gamer in you, instead of the money in your pocket. Besides, I didn't like what happened to the Saturn, so I just felt like supporting Sega a little, even if they should lose the battle again. The Saturn had a few unique and very addictive games at its time, and I hated to see it being stomped into the ground by the "yes, your grandma can use one of these too" kind of marketing power behind the PSX. Not to say the Saturn was SUCH a great console, apparently coding for that thing was one huge pain in the a$$, but the games kept me awake late into the night, and that's what counts.
Anyway, I'm happy with my Dreamcast because even though some games look quite glitzy and glorious on the PS2, I find more games with much more replay value and "simple old fun" (like Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio) on the DC. In my eyes, the DC is the true gamer's console, while the PS2 is the casual gamer's console. Pretty much what Sony envisioned all along. They don't want the hardcore gamers as customers, they want the casual gamers, because they exist in larger numbers and ALSO have money to spend. The DVD player feature shows some of that, it turns the PS2 into a household appliance more than a gaming console. This machine simply has no real focus, it's a "let's try to please everybody" box, which you know is impossible.
I'll stick to my DC for arcade action and my PC for RPG fun. I really don't feel I'm missing out on anything by not owning a PS2 - the DC is the first console to make me feel the way I felt back in the SNES days, where you actively waited for some hyped new game to come out and got all excited about it.
Blah, nobody's gonna read this, why am I writing? :) |
