The famous song "PEnnsylvania 6-5000" also recalls this. MUrray Hill is another famous one, since Murray Hill, NJ is where AT&T's Bell Labs (now Lucent)was (is) based. You might also notice that area codes never used to spell anything due to the 1 or 0 which up until recently had to be used as the second digit. A webpage on this subject with names known to be used in the past is at http://ourwebhome.com/TENP/TENproject.html (According to that page 55x was reserverd for radio telephone numbers, I don't know if they mean like cell-phones, or phone numbers given out on radio/TV shows and movies). KL was the designation for Klondike, so when you watch old movies or TV shows from the 50's & 60's, they will often say 'Klondike-5'. I remember they always did that on the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show.
