Is AJ Gay? I don't think so; I think he's just socially inept. However, if he is, no biggie. Sure, Miranda will be frustrated, the other guys might be somewhat taken aback, but it'll be a phenominal oportunity for growth. Don't make too much of it, tho; after all...this IS a comic strip, not a blueprint for social change.
