Louisiana is only state with "parishes" AFAIK. It started as a Spanish colony, and the parishes were originally Roman Catholic parishes. I had a strong "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore" feeling when I moved down there and saw school buses painted with "East Saint John The Baptist Parish Public Schools" on them. For one thing, it took a lot of paint!
