Wisconsin here, and we have counties. I never thought it was colloquial at all. Also, there's a movie out now; Orange County.
    county -- n., pl. -ties 1. the largest administrative division of a U.S. state.
Yeah, it's in the dictionary alright. Maybe people don't refer to counties in smaller states. The southern states are larger, on average. States like Delaware or Rhode Island might only have a couple counties between the two of them.
