The Pennsylvania "Dutch" and many Quakers both lived in the area of the colony granted to Penn. Once William took over the colony, the rules about religion became quite tolerant, attracting both. At the time, the "plain dress" as shown in the cartoon really was plain, so they all kind of looked like that. Thus the "Quaker" motif for companies from the Commonwealth, that now confuses people into conflating the Amish and the Quakers.
So nowadays, there's a fair bit of Dutch/Deutsch and Quaker mixing, since the kids have all been going to the same schools for a few generations. |
