In the grand old days of 300 bps on the C=64's automodem waiting for long messages to download on BBSs was downright painful. You could read the words as they came across. The people I knew used shortcuts to keep the length to a minimum. It had nothing to do with beeing 'leet' and we said elite if that is what we meant. I don't remember switching numbers for letters though, it just seems silly - except on calculators, spelling things etc. but that's a geek thing :-) I wonder if I can find a 300bps modem and try to surf with it... Perhaps set it up as a torture device.
